Fatty Liver
Excess fat stored inside liver cells. It usually causes no symptoms at all and is most often picked up by chance on an ultrasound done for another reason.
What is happening
It matters because a proportion of people progress from simple fat, to inflammation, to scarring, and ultimately to cirrhosis - and the early stages are entirely reversible. Common contributors are diabetes, high triglycerides, central obesity and alcohol. A Fibroscan tells us which stage you are at without a biopsy.
What helps
- Gradual, sustained weight loss - even 7-10% of body weight changes the picture
- Bring diabetes and cholesterol under control
- Stop alcohol
- Regular exercise, independent of weight loss
See a doctor promptly if you have
- Swelling of the abdomen or legs
- Yellowing of the eyes
- Confusion or drowsiness
- Vomiting blood
How we investigate it
Almost always the answer comes from a careful history first, and only then a targeted test — not a panel of everything. Depending on what we find, that may be an endoscopy, a colonoscopy, a Fibroscan or a breath test. We will tell you why a test is being suggested, and what we would do differently depending on the result.
