Procedures

Upper GI Endoscopy

A thin flexible camera passed through the mouth to examine the food pipe, stomach and the first part of the small intestine.

Typical duration
10-15 minutes
Preparation
8 hours fasting
Available at
All four centres

What it involves

We use it to find the cause of heartburn, vomiting, bleeding, upper abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing or unexplained weight loss - and to treat, in the same sitting: stopping bleeding, widening narrowed segments, removing swallowed objects or polyps, and placing feeding tubes and stents.

You might be advised this if you have

  • Persistent heartburn or acidity that is not settling
  • Vomiting blood or passing black stools
  • Difficulty or pain on swallowing
  • Unexplained weight loss or anaemia

Preparing for it

Preparation is the part patients most often get wrong, and it is the part that most often causes a procedure to be repeated. Our full instructions — including bowel preparation, fasting times, which of your regular medicines to continue and which to stop — are on the preparation page. Please read it before the day.
