Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
An ultrasound probe mounted on the tip of an endoscope, giving the closest possible view of the pancreas, liver and bile ducts.
What it involves
Diagnostic - bile duct stones, and needle biopsies of lymph nodes, pancreas and liver for tuberculosis or cancer. Therapeutic - draining pancreatic pseudocysts and walled-off necrosis, EUS-guided biliary drainage and gastrojejunostomy, and rendezvous procedures after a failed ERCP.
You might be advised this if you have
- A pancreatic mass or cyst found on a scan
- Suspected bile duct stones
- Tissue diagnosis needed from a lymph node or the pancreas
Preparing for it
Preparation is the part patients most often get wrong, and it is the part that most often causes a procedure to be repeated. Our full instructions — including bowel preparation, fasting times, which of your regular medicines to continue and which to stop — are on the preparation page. Please read it before the day.
