Conditions

Acidity, Indigestion & GERD

Burning in the chest, sour regurgitation, bloating and upper abdominal discomfort - the commonest reason people come to see us, and one that affects roughly a quarter of adults.

What is happening

Persistent reflux is not just discomfort. Left alone for years it can damage the lining of the food pipe and, in a small number of people, change it in ways that need watching. It is also frequently confused with heart pain, which is why chest pain always deserves a proper assessment.

What helps

  • Eat smaller meals, more often
  • Leave three hours between your last meal and lying down
  • Raise the head of the bed by four to six inches - more effective than extra pillows
  • Avoid regular NSAID painkillers and aspirin unless prescribed
  • Lose weight around the waist if you can

See a doctor promptly if you have

  • Difficulty swallowing, or food sticking
  • Vomiting blood, or black tarry stools
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Symptoms that first start after the age of 45

How we investigate it

Almost always the answer comes from a careful history first, and only then a targeted test — not a panel of everything. Depending on what we find, that may be an endoscopy, a colonoscopy, a Fibroscan or a breath test. We will tell you why a test is being suggested, and what we would do differently depending on the result.
