How to prepare

Getting this right is the difference between a clear examination and one that has to be repeated. Read the section for your procedure, and call us if anything is unclear — it is a much better use of a phone call than a repeated test.

Colonoscopy

The bowel preparation

You will be given one of Peglec, Pegmove, Pegred, Pegwash or Coloprep.

  • Peglec: mix the entire sachet into 2 litres of water and chill it. Drink one glass every 10 minutes and finish within about 2 hours. If you feel sick, pause for 30 minutes and then continue.
  • Coloprep: fill both bottles with water and drink within an hour, followed by a further litre of clear fluid.

What you may drink

Clear liquids only: water, green tea or black coffee without milk, apple juice, white grape juice, white cranberry juice, clear lemonade, Sprite or 7-Up.

Nothing red, blue or purple

Coloured drinks stain the bowel lining and can be mistaken for blood — which means the examination may have to be repeated. This includes squashes, jellies and ice lollies.

Your regular medicines

  • Stop iron tablets and fibre supplements one week before.
  • Continue essential medicines such as blood pressure tablets with small sips of water.
  • Aspirin, vitamins and ordinary painkillers do not usually need to be stopped.
  • If you take warfarin, acitrom or clopidogrel, contact the doctor who prescribed it before stopping anything.
  • Do not take your diabetes medicines on the morning of the procedure.

Stop all food and drink 4 hours before your appointment.

Upper GI endoscopy

  • 8 hours of fasting. Not even chewing gum, mints or sweets — if you have eaten, the procedure will have to be rescheduled.
  • Nothing to drink in the 4 hours before.
  • You may brush your teeth, as long as you do not swallow.
  • A short intravenous sedation is used. A routine endoscopy takes about 10 minutes.

For both procedures

  • Arrive at least an hour before your appointment time.
  • An adult must come with you. This is not optional — you will have been sedated.
  • You may not travel home alone by taxi or auto.
  • No driving, operating machinery or alcohol for 12 hours afterwards.
  • Bring your previous reports, scans and a list of your current medicines.
