Manometry & 24-hour pH Study
A pressure test of the swallowing muscles, or of the anal muscles, that measures how well they are working.
What it involves
Oesophageal manometry diagnoses achalasia, reflux and difficulty swallowing; anorectal manometry investigates constipation and faecal incontinence. The 24-hour pH study measures acid in the food pipe across a full day, using either a swallowed capsule or a fine nasal catheter.
You might be advised this if you have
- Difficulty swallowing with a normal endoscopy
- Chest pain where the heart has been cleared
- Reflux that is not responding to medication
- Chronic cough, hoarseness or throat irritation
