Colonoscopy
The same examination from the other end - a flexible camera that inspects the entire large bowel and the last part of the small bowel.
What it involves
Used for rectal bleeding, a change in bowel habit, abdominal pain and weight loss, and for bowel cancer screening. It is also therapeutic: removing polyps, EMR and ESD for early cancers, placing metal stents, controlling bleeding and balloon dilatation.
You might be advised this if you have
- Bleeding from the back passage
- A change in bowel habit lasting more than a few weeks
- Screening from age 45, or earlier with a family history
- Iron-deficiency anaemia
