Procedures

Capsule Endoscopy

You swallow a camera the size of a large tablet. It photographs the small bowel as it travels and passes out naturally.

Typical duration
About 12 hours of recording
Preparation
Fasting required
Available at
All four centres

What it involves

It reaches the part of the small intestine that a standard endoscopy and colonoscopy cannot see - which is usually where bleeding of unknown cause is hiding. Also used for coeliac and Crohn's disease, angiodysplasia and small-bowel polyps.

You might be advised this if you have

  • Bleeding that endoscopy and colonoscopy could not explain
  • Suspected small bowel Crohn's disease
  • Persistent anaemia with normal scopes

Preparing for it

Preparation is the part patients most often get wrong, and it is the part that most often causes a procedure to be repeated. Our full instructions — including bowel preparation, fasting times, which of your regular medicines to continue and which to stop — are on the preparation page. Please read it before the day.
